Trainers and Programmes

Sinéad Laffan is a teacher and teacher trainer, based in Budapest. Originally from Ireland, she moved to the Czech Republic in 2008 where she worked on both initial teacher training courses and with more experienced teachers on TESOL Diploma and provided inset training.  She has worked with teachers in the Czech Republic, Spain, India and the UK.  She is currently the Coordinator of the IATEFL Teacher Development Special Interest Group.

Beyond the Coursebook

In this series of workshops, we will explore ways to bring the coursebook to life for our students, both by exploiting its content in new and interesting ways and by moving beyond its limitations, for example, with the use of technology (video-making, authentic film, music and images) in order to motivate and excite students.  We will focus mainly on speaking and listening, helping students to feel a meaningful connection to the English language as a real life skill, rather than just an academic subject.

Edmund Dudley is a teacher trainer, materials writer and teacher of English with more than 20 years of classroom experience.  Originally from the UK, he is based in Budapest.  He has considerable experience of teaching EFL at both primary and secondary levels. He has worked with teachers of English from around the world as a freelance teacher trainer  delivering seminars and courses, speaking at conferences and presenting webinars.  He is also a tutor at the English Language Teachers' Summer Seminar held at Exeter Colelge, Oxford.

Nuturing a positive learning environment

This course will tackle some of the day-to-day classroom challenges faced by teachers at both primary and secondary levels, such as working with mixed-ability groups and dealing with unmotivated students.  We will consider the benefits of a learner-centred approach, and see how it can be applied in practice.  We will also be exploring ways that topics such as literature and culture can be made accessible and relevant to learners of all ages and abilities, bringing lessons to life in the process.
